  • The firmware restoration tool is a small program that can be found on the CD you receive with the WL-HDD from asus.

Prerequisites

  • Disable all but one network interfaces on your PC. This is nessesary because the firmware restoration tool is not very intelligent in finding the correct interface to use for communicating with the router.
  • Configure Windows TCP/IP networking to have static IP address 192.168.1.10 as shown in this image. It may also be worth plugging a standard or crossover ethernet cable directly from the computer into the WL-HDD for configuration purposes- bypassing any routers or switches you may be running on your LAN.
  • Disconnect the power cable.
  • Press the reset button on the back of the router.
  • Keep pressing the reset button while inserting the power cable again.
  • Keep pressing the reset button until the power LED starts flashing every second.

The tool

  • Start the firmware restoration tool on your PC (You can find this tool on the CD or download it from the Asus website).
  • This tool should find the Asus router -> select it.
  • Select the correct firmware image file you want to upload. The extension is usually *.trx* Double check again if it's the correct one!
  • Press upload and wait.

Using the firmware

  • Depending on the firmware being flashed, you may need to enter a password for the web-interface. Some default username and password fields are:

Asus Firmware username= admin, password= admin

Oleg Firmware username= admin, password= <blank>

It is recommended for security reasons that you change both the username and password for your WL-HDD.
The easiest way to do this is via the web interface.
  • Maintain the TCP/IP configuration above whilst you are still configuring the WL-HDD. Once you have setup the correct IP configuration in the Web-Interface, you can connect the WL-HDD into your existing LAN and change the TCP/IP settings on you computer to what they were.
  • You should now be ready to use your new firmware, do not try and reload any settings that you have backed up to your computer if the firmware version is different to the previous one.
